A recent publication highlighted the presence of a specific mutation with regional distribution for ATTRv (Glu54Gln) in Romania and reported a prevalence of the disease of 1.02 per 1,000,000 inhabitants. This mixed phenotype form of ATTRv is characterized by early onset and rapid progression of the disease with aggressive development of pulmonary edema and limited survival [32]. In order to understand whether cardiologists from Romania are aware of the epidemiology, diagnosis and available treatment options for this novel entity we performed a survey in which we assessed the level of knowledge regarding ATTRv among practicing cardiologists in the country. Our results show that a wide variation exists in cardiologists’ awareness of the prevalence, diagnostic tools and available treatments for ATTRv. Therefore, education should be focused on these areas in order to improve the recognition of CA and facilitate a timely diagnosis and appropriate management.
