Oftentimes, apostille for school transcripts have their transcripts or diplomas authenticated by an apostille before they can use them in a foreign country. This process is a requirement for many countries that are members of the 1961 Hague Convention.
Before you begin this process, it is very important to check with the foreign entity that you plan on using these documents with to make sure that they require an apostille. Some entities may accept a College Seal or notarization of the transcripts and will not require the additional step of an apostille.
How to Get an Apostille for School Transcripts
Once you have contacted the entity and determined that they will need an apostille, you will need to request your transcripts from the Registrar’s office at the school where you attended. In order for the transcripts to be considered authenticated, they must be signed by the Registrar or an authorized designee on official letterhead with a notary’s seal.
After the Registrar or designated person has signed and notarized the transcripts, you will need to have them certified by the County Clerk. This is an in-person process and will require you to travel to the office of the County Clerk where the notary is registered.
After the County Clerk has certified the document(s), you will need to send them to the New York Department of State in order to receive your final NYC Apostille. The New York Department of State will then return your document(s) to you with the Apostille on it.
