On behalf of the Morningside Mile Committee, we would like to thank you for your participation, donation, and support for the runners for the 4th Annual Morningside Mile Honoring Those Who Serve! This year we had just under 200 participants register for the one mile race and many others attend the Morningside Mile MACC n’ Cheese competition and Comedy Night fundraisers. Together, we raised over $6,000 for the Allegheny Gold Star Mothers and the Morningside Area Community Council in the name of our 2014 honoree – Morningside resident and Gold Star Mother, Mrs. Frances Colletto 1914-2013.
We will be presenting a check to the Allegheny Gold Star Mothers on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 7:00PM at the Morningside VFW (1820 Morningside Ave).
We’d very much appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to provide us with feedback on your experience and recommendation for next year. We are looking for feedback from those who participated in the race and those who did not, since the race impacts all Morningside residents. Click here for the short survey:
Thank you again for your support of the 2014 Morningside Mile and we appreciate your help planning for an even more successful 2015 race!

Did you know that trees increase property value, decrease storm runoff, help eliminate pollution, cut energy costs and add beauty and harmony to our beautiful neighborhood?
If you live in Morningside and are interested in being considered for a tree, free of charge, from the City of Pittsburgh, please download the form below. Please read it carefully, fill it out and return it to Lisa Petrilli, MACC Beautification & Greening Chair, on or before August 21, 2014 (contact information is on the form).
Don’t hesitate to Lisa if you have any questions.
Download a tree application!
*Please note that completing this form does not guarantee that you will get a tree. An assessment of the property where the tree will be planted will be conducted by Tree Vitalize to determine the suitability of the location.
On July 12, from 10am to noon you can join the Morningside Tree Tenders and Tree Pittsburgh to care for the newly planted trees in our neighborhood.
Activities will include weeding, mulching, adjusting stakes, and you can do this while getting to know neighbors and fellow Tree Tenders, and ensuring the health of Morningside trees!
Please register if you plan to attend.http://treepittsburgh.org/events/morningside-mulching-party

In this new series, MACC interviews one of our business sponsors to find out what Morningside looks like through the eyes of an entrepreneur. This month we talked to Lisa, who recently celebrated Hairstyles by Lisa’s 30th anniversary in Morningside.
Business: Hairstyles by Lisa
Established: January 4, 1984
Why did you choose to open a business in Morningside? How did you get started?
I chose to open a business in Morningside because I was born and raised here. When my business was established, I was 19 and too young to get a loan, so my father co-signed for me.
What do you enjoy most about running your business? What makes your business special?
I have been very blessed to have survived for this many years here. I credit my success to all my clients who have stuck with me through thick and thin. I would not have survived without them. Also, it has taken a lot of hard work. It has not been easy. I have enjoyed running a business, but the best part has been the close relationships I have developed with my clients. That’s what makes my business so special.
What has been your biggest challenge with running a business in Morningside?
The biggest challenges I face are trying to keep a small business going, between the economy and challenging times. It’s harder now than ever before because of the rising costs of overhead and the larger businesses taking over the smaller ones. I hope to stick around a while because I love what I do, and I love the neighborhood.
