Why did you choose to open a business in Morningside? How did you get started?

I chose to open a business in Morningside because I was born and raised here. When my business was established, I was 19 and too young to get a loan, so my father co-signed for me.

What do you enjoy most about running your business? What makes your business special?

I have been very blessed to have survived for this many years here. I credit my success to all my clients who have stuck with me through thick and thin. I would not have survived without them. Also, it has taken a lot of hard work. It has not been easy. I have enjoyed running a business, but the best part has been the close relationships I have developed with my clients. That’s what makes my business so special.

What has been your biggest challenge with running a business in Morningside?

The biggest challenges I face are trying to keep a small business going, between the economy and challenging times. It’s harder now than ever before because of the rising costs of overhead and the larger businesses taking over the smaller ones. I hope to stick around a while because I love what I do, and I love the neighborhood.

Why did you choose to open a business in Morningside?
I grew up in Morningside and always felt it to be a special place with some extraordinary people (and characters.) Lots of those folks shaped who I am and I see an opportunity to give a little something back.

What do you enjoy most about running your business?
I most enjoy reconnecting with old friends and meeting the new families that make Morningside home. It’s a pretty good feeling seeing the old and the new enjoy the Pub. I’ve also really enjoyed meeting some of the young people who are sons and daughters of my classmates and friends growing up. It makes me feel a little old, but it’s great to see that my friends have raised such good kids.

What has been your biggest challenge with running a business in Morningside?
My biggest challenge has been finding time to do everything that I set out to do when I opened. I sometimes get ahead of myself and pacing has never been my strong suit. Marketing and getting the Pub’s name and strong points out there while tending to day-to-day operations and growing the business has also been a challenge. Lastly, just making certain that the Pub is a positive addition to the community and keeping the people that I envisioned at the start is important to me.

What would you like to see happen in Morningside in the next five years?
I would like to see more small businesses call Morningside home. I’d love to see Morningside with a coffee shop/bakery, a deli, cleaners, etc. Smaller shops that give it a real thriving small town appeal. And yes, I would like to see another Pub-style gastropub come to town. Competition and choices will bring people to discover what a nice neighborhood Morningside is.

If you could do anything else other than run your business, what would you do?
I would really like to manufacture something. It may sound a little old fashioned but I don’t think we make enough of our own “stuff” anymore. If I could find the right product and niche, I would definitely like to start a company and make or build things.
